Red Cross Lifeguard Course

The City of Powell will be periodically offering American Red Cross Lifeguarding. This certification is necessary to be employed as a Lifeguard at the Powell Aquatic Center. If you are interested, please call to be added to an interest list.

The American Red Cross Lifeguard Training is a professional, state of the art course that leads to certification in Lifeguard Training, First Aid, and CPR for the Professional Rescuer. This course will equip participants with the skills and technical knowledge to become effective members of an aquatic facility team.

Pre-Requisite Swim Test is required to continue course: you must be able to swim 300 meters: 100 front crawl, 100 breaststroke, and 100 of either front crawl or breaststroke. Then swim 20 meters using either front crawl or breaststroke, surface dive at least 10 feet, retrieve a 10 pound brick, swim back 20 meters to the starting point with the brick and exit the water without a ladder or steps within 1 minute 40 seconds. Tread water using only your legs for 2 minutes. Minimum age requirement is 15 years. (Minimum 4 participants)

This will be a blended learning course with participants completing online lessons prior to the 3 in-class sessions. The in-class sessions will be scheduled based on all the participants availability.

Red Cross Lifeguard Instructor Course

The primary purpose of the American Red Cross Basic Lifeguarding Instructor Course is to train instructors to teach the basic-level American Red Cross Lifeguarding courses. The care steps outlined within this manual are consistent with the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation (ILCOR) 2015 International Consensus on Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care Science with Treatment Recommendations (CoSTR) and the 2015 American Heart Association Guidelines Update for Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation and Emergency Cardiovascular Care. This manual also reflects the United States Lifeguarding Standards: A Review and Report of the United States Lifeguarding Coalition, a collaborative effort of the American Red Cross, the United States Lifesaving Association and the YMCA of the USA.

Pre-Requisite
1. Be at least 17 years old on or before the final scheduled session of the course.
2. Possess a current basic-level certification in Lifeguarding/First Aid/CPR/AED.
3. Successfully complete the online Introduction to the Lifeguarding Instructor Course prior to the pre-course skills session via the class roster and online content completion status report.

Cost: $180 (minimum 4 participants required for course)

Red Cross Courses

CPR/AED/First Aid

This course gives individuals the knowledge and skills necessary for recognizing and providing basic care for breathing and cardiac emergencies, injuries and sudden illnesses, as well as including how to use an automated external defibrillator (AED) for victims until advanced medical personnel arrive and take over. This is a blended learning course with an online and in-course session. You must complete the online portion prior to attending the in-class session.

We are currently able to do Provisional certifications, where you complete the online portion and then have 90 days to complete the in-class session. Call us for details.

Cost is: $90

If you prefer to not to a blended learning, the cost will be $120 and will be scheduled on instructor availability.

All of the Powell Aquatic swim lessons include a combination of stroke work and water safety. Powell Aquatic swim lesson levels are equivalent to Red Cross Swim Lesson levels.

  Level 6: Competitive Swimming & Fundamentals of Diving

 

Water Kids :

This class is designed for children ages 6 months - 3 years just starting out in lessons. This class will help a child become more comfortable in and around the water. The child's parent or guardian will also be in the water.

Turtles:

This class is designed for young beginners. Children learn the basic water skills of breath control, bubble blowing, floating, and kicking, along with basic beginner strokes.

April   15th, 17th, 22nd, 24th  (M/W) 4:00-4:30 pm

Fishes:

This class is pre-level 1, and is for children who are already comfortable in the water, and perform supported glides and floats, along with beginning learning strokes for freestyle and backstroke.

Morning Aerobics Hour:

is an aerobics class based on water aerobic exercises from CDs produced by aerobic trainers and takes place in shallow water so no swimming ability is needed.
